Record a good sound on the spot?

Author:

I often hear people say, "We can record sound in post". With ADR, the step is for the actor to listen to the recorded white, and then record the dialogue into the corresponding clip through a high-quality microphone in the recording studio, compressing and equalizing the sound. But the whole process required a huge investment of time and money, not counting the recording of the background sound.

The importance of a sound recordist?

If you listen to only one person on the spot, it must be a sound recordist. In fact, the sound engineer is more experienced, knows what to pay attention to, his job is to "listen", he knows what is needed in post-production.

All the work to a sound recordist?

Just as one person in a restaurant can cook, serve, and wash dishes at the same time, a sound recordist can also record, mix, and voice over for budget reasons. However, the skills required for each job are not the same. In the case of mixing, to do the job, hire a professional who has a recording studio and at least one sound room.

Using an unprofessional microphone?

If so, why not simply use your phone camera to shoot and record a movie? It's just that if every microphone can be used, why do some microphones cost tens of thousands of yuan and some only cost 180 yuan? It's no surprise that a studio has a variety of different types of microphones.

To record high-quality live recordings, you must use the right type of microphone. Strong pointing microphones are suitable for exteriors, finger microphones are suitable for interiors, and non-directional microphones can be used for smaller interiors. The more polar the microphone is, the better its ability to selectively pick up sound from the front*, and the higher the signal-to-noise ratio.

Underestimating the impact of location?

When you check the location, the professional thing to do is to bring the tuner with you, because he knows what to do to record the best sound. A room, if it does not have windows or furniture, is prone to reverberation, making it difficult to record and edit sounds. Remember: it's hard to eliminate reverberations in sound recordings, but it's easy to add them.

Record music or background noise at the same time?

How ridiculous it would be if the shot passed but mixed in with noise! Once the background sound is recorded in the dialogue, it is impossible to eliminate it. But if you only have dialogue, you can easily add background music and necessary noise, etc. The less noise you have in your dialogue, the better it is for post-production.

We don't need separate vocal cords?

If you edit dialogue with a time gap between two pieces of dialogue, or when you combine the dialogue from two different shots, it is likely to cause a slight difference in background sound, which will definitely distract the audience once it is captured.

To avoid this, record an ambient soundtrack, i.e. record the ambient sound for a minute before or after the shooting, so that there is a neutral ambient sound that can solve the big problem for you.
